Official Documents
To carry out economic and tax operations in Spain, such as buying property or registering a vehicle, you need an NIE number, or “Identification Number for Foreigners”. EU citizens can live and work freely within EU Member States, but if staying over 183 days in Spain, they must register for an NIE verde.

Tax Procedures
All property owners in Spain, including non-fiscal residents, must file an annual non-resident tax declaration, known as “IRPF—Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas” or Personal Income Tax. Paying this tax is mandatory, and it must be settled before claiming back any part of the Capital Gains Tax paid upon property sale.
